Haunted Halloween Farming: Anachronistic Absol
October 25, 2009 | 27 Comments
It was around this time last year that I decided to create a dual purpose Absol to give out on the farm. Dual nature in that they can be used as a sweeper or team support. Little did I know then it would take a year before I finally got around to it. But, these Absol are all worth it, as they are a bit fortuitous in their existence. I began preparing the parents, when I was on vacation in Salem, Massachusetts. The parents were hatched on the anniversary of one of the most tragic events in the United States developmental history. I of course speak of the Salem Witch Trials. The parents were hatched on the last day of the 316th anniversary of the Salem Witch Trials. It is only appropriate because Absol are known for their ability to forewarn people before tragedy. Not only are these Absol already awesome; but their lineage possesses a little more mystery than meets the eye.

Each spooktacular Absol is a random nature. They all have the ability Superluck: Heightens critical hit ratio of moves.
Each one will possess the same move set:
Baton Pass
Absol passes any stat bonuses to the next team mate.
Sucker Punch (Dark STAB, Power 80 , Acc. 100%)
Absol moves first if opponent is planning to attack.
Taunt
Absol has a knack for enrageing it’s foes. As a result the opponent gets locked into attacking for two to four turns.
Swords Dance
There is nothing more beautiful than an Absol performing a Swords Dance to boost its attack two levels.
Trick or Treat; The IV’s on each Absol are all a surprise what you get is random. All Absol are named after different Buffy the Vampire Slayer characters. Please, don’t ask for a specific character or to change the nick name.

Haunted Halloween Farming: Spiritomb

Curse of the Spiritomb
![]()
“Don’t go in the temple.” the villagers warned. “There is an ancient curse that plague all those who enter”
“Ha! Ancient curses are a lot mumbo jumbo,” I thought to myself. After all, I don’t pay much attention to those superstitions.
After months of digging underground in the nearby tunnels I came across an Odd Keystone and after careful scrutiny, I was able to determine that it was the missing piece to unlock the secrets of the ancient temple. I cautiously placed the Odd Keystone on the temple’s dilapidated altar table and waited to see what would happen.
Slowly the table began to sink into the floor and a loud rumbling sound came from behind me as the wall of the temple moved to reveal a hidden passageway. I crept stealthily through the dusty passage using my torch to knock down the massive network of sticky webs left there by grossly enormous spiders. Finally I came to the end of the hidden path and entered a large open area where the object of my quest waited for me.
It was Spiritomb, the forbidden pokemon. This dark, ghostly spirit glowed menacingly in the middle of the room and immediately I felt the Pressure of his presence. I noticed every move that I made took twice the effort (and PP) than before.
A Will-o-wisp of fire burst from him igniting the torches placed around the chamber and the searing heat burned me and cut my attack in half. Normal and fighting moves had no effect on the ghostly beast and his dark nature made him immune to any Psychic attacks that I might utilize. In fact, due to its typing, there are no super-effective moves to try a deal with this phantasm quickly and my burn was slowly and steadily sapping my own HP.
The Dark Pulse (Dark, STAB, Power 80, Acc 100) emanating from him caused even more damage to me, which also made me flinch 20% of the time. I was gradually lowering his HP, but mine was getting dangerously low.
Luckily, I had some MooMoo Milk to drink to replenish my loss. To my surprise the Spiritomb used Pain Split and used my HP gain to his advantage. It was as if our HPs were added together and shared equally.
I was running out of time, but speed was to my advantage for the Spiritomb was relatively slow in his movements. Just as I was sure I had the upper hand, a Shadow Sneak (Ghost, STAB Power 40, Acc 100) hit me before I could move. I finally threw a dusk ball from my pack and watched the specter roll back and forth in the ball until it came quietly to rest.
When I showed the villagers the pokemon that they had all came to fear, they rewarded me with a strange berry they had found in the jungle. They said it was the rare and elusive Enigma Berry and when I asked what it did they told me that it increases your HP if you are hit by a super-effective attack.
“But never give it to a Spiritomb,” they laughed forebodingly. “It will do no good, for no attacks are super-effective against the curse of the temple.
If you wish to be haunted by this ancient curse, you don’t need to toil in the underground and face the dangers of the temple. Just meet me in the wifi room on Friday, October 24 at 8 pm Eastern (5 PM Pacific) and you will receive your very own Spiritomb holding an Enigma berry. I don’t really need anything in return but I do appreciate any item or berry that you will trade to me.

Pokemon Farming!: Houndour
October 17, 2008 | 55 Comments
![]()
Houndour is an often over looked pokemon of the fire and dark typing. It’s known for their tenacity and team work, Houndour are a useful member of any team. At level 24 Houndour evolves into the eerie Houndoom. Houndoom is a great member of any team. With the ability to absorb and power itself up with enemy fire attacks, Houndoom works well for forcing choiced opponents stuck on a fire attack to switch out, giving it the opportunity to boost it’s stat. With Nasty Plot in it’s arsenal it poses a threat even to the queen of special walling, Blissey. So, the Houndour I have for you today are Timid(attack-, speed+) with the following move set:
Nasty Plot: Raises Houndour’s special attack by two stages.
Flamethrower: A powerful STAB with a base power of 95 and a 10% chance of burning your opponent.
Dark Pulse: A secondary STAB, with a bonus of a 20% flinch rate.
Counter: A retaliation move that inflicts double the damage taken from any physical attack.
Ability:
Flash Fire: When hit by a fire attack(Will-o-wisp included) Houndour’s fire attacks will recieve a 1.5 boost
Rules:
Post your name and FC (even if we’ve traded before I will need it again)
Only 1 Pokémon per person
If you prefer a particular gender or ability tell me, this is on the first come first serve basis.
Please do not trade me eggs
Be in the Wi-Fi zone at 5 pm(PST), on October 18th
Make yourself available to Trade (Invite–>Trade) I will come to you when I’m ready.
Items(rare candies or Heart Scales) are very appreciated but not required.

Looking at Pokemon: Absol
March 20, 2008 | 24 Comments

Absol, the disaster Pokemon, was introduced in the Ruby and Sapphire series of GBA games. Absol is a single type Pokemon (Dark) and does not evolve. Absol sits at the 359th spot on the National Pokedex.
Absol has a very good Attack score (Max 394 which puts it in the top 10 if you ignore legendary Pokemon, spot 13 if you don’t) and above average Special Attack and Speed. Its other three scores are only average. This Pokemon comes in both genders and has either the ability Pressure (When this Pokémon is hit by a move, the opponent’s PP lowers by 2 rather than 1/ If the Pokémon is in the lead spot, chance of encountering wild Pokemon increases) or Super Luck (Raises the critical-hit ratio of moves; allows simultaneous use of Dire Hit and Focus Energy) .Both abilities can prove very helpful in battle.
Absol is able to use a wide variety of TMs and HMs. Its egg moves are mostly of the Dark type. None of which fall in the Special category. Its level up moves are heavy on Normal (9) and Dark (5). There is also one Fighting move on the list and two Psychic moves.
Absol is catchable in both Diamond and Pearl games (Mass Outbreaks on route 213) as well as being transferable from the previous GBA games via the Pal Park.
Now that the basics are out of the way I’m going to tell you a little bit about how to effectively use this Pokemon in your game. Right off the bat you are probably thinking that the only use you will ever have for this Pokemon is in the arena of battling, this is not so. It is quite possible to have someone trade an Absol to you when you first begin your Pokemon journey. Due to the wonders of Wi-Fi it is very easy to avoid the built-in Pokemon restrictions of Diamond and Pearl.
One of the problems with adventuring in Sinnoh is the lack of certain types of Pokemon until you defeat the Elite Four and complete your Sinnoh Pokedex. When it comes to Dark Pokemon you will be limited to Murkrow, Stunky, Spiritomb, Drapion and Sneasel.
Murkrow can be encountered early on but Stunky only appears in Diamond. Spiritomb is near impossible to get unless you have a lot of friends. Drapion requires evolving its earlier form and Sneasel does not appear until you have acquired several badges and head towards Snowpoint. Having access to a strong Dark-type Pokemon early in the game can change the single-player game experience for you.
Adventure Mode Absol
If you get a freshly hatched Absol with no special breeding you can expect it to only know the move Scratch. This is a rather weak Physical move but it is on par with what you will encounter in the early part of the game. At level 12 it will learn the much better move Quick Attack. This move is just as effective as Scratch but it is faster.
The first damage-inducing Dark move Absol learns is Pursuit at level 20. Pursuit gives you a STAB attack with the added benefit that it can damage a foe when they try to switch out. Because of its low power you will be replacing it with bite upon attaining level 28.
Sucker Punch is also a Dark-type attack that Absol can learn upon reaching level 44. Even though Sucker Punch has a higher power rating than Bite it only works if your foe uses a Physical Attack against you. This is a nice back-up move but you need to keep Bite as your main Dark-type attack.
You will continue on with Bite until Absol gets the chance to learn Night Slash at level 52. Odds are you will have already defeated the Elite Four by this point and unless your Absol has the Super Luck ability I would have to advise that you stick with Bite.
What about the non-Dark moves in Absol’s level-up move pool? Most of them are Status moves. I generally avoid Special Attack moves on an Absol due to their high Attack score. Still, having a Special Attack waiting in the wings can prove beneficial. Future Sight and Razor Wind are the only Special Attacks that Absol learns while leveling up.
Razor Wind pops up at level 17 and should be learned. Even though Razor Wind is a two-turn move it will hit both opponents in a Double Battle. Its Base Power of 80 makes it the most powerful Attack you will learn until Sucker Punch at level 44. Future Sight is also a Power 80 Attack but it hits several turns later and is not 100% accurate the way Razor Wind is.
In the Status department Absol has several good moves for the adventure mode of the game. Between Swords Dance and Double Team you can either knock out your foes faster or make yourself last longer in battle.
My preferred order of moves in adventure mode are as follows:
Move 1: Scratch -> Razor Wind
Move 2: Leer -> Swords Dance
Move 3: Taunt -> Pursuit -> Bite
move 4: Quick Attack -> Slash
After this point I have usually defeated the Elite Four, transferred my Pokemon out of the game and reset the game for a new go with a new team.
Battle Mode Absol
Using Absol in adventure mode is far different from breeding an Absol for competitive battling. When battling competitively Absol falls in the Under Used Tier. This grouping is based off of Absol’s Base Points (465) and Move Pool. Some tournaments also exist where you will be forced to only use Pokemon of a certain evolutionary type. In Absol’s case it fits in the “non-evolving category”.
Even though Absol falls into the Under Used tier the only other Pokemon with a Base Attack of 130 are Kingler and Flareon, both of which are “evolving” Pokemon. This means Absol has the highest Attack score for the non-evolving Under Used tier Pokemon. When it comes to Speed, Absol is just about in the middle with a Base Speed of 75.
Absol 1: Baton Passer
Some people over look Absol as a Baton Passer because it does not have an ability that leads to passing on heightened stats. Absol is not one of the best Baton Passers out there but it can learn the move and if it has Pressure it can lay some hurt on the opponent’s Pokemon if they use high Power low Power Point moves.
IVs: HP:252, Def:8, Spd:252
Nature: Jolly (Spd+/SpA-)
Move 1: Baton Pass (Egg Move)
Move 2: Double Team
Move 3: Psych Up (TM)
Move 4: Swords Dance / Calm Mind (TM)
The choice between Swords Dance and Calm Mind depends on what Pokemon you are setting up for. If the next Pokemon is a Physical Attacker go with Swords Dance. If they are a Special Attacker go with Calm Mind.
Absol is far from the best Baton Passer around but when a tournament restricts the better Baton Passers it is good to know that an Absol is an option.
Absol 2: Speed Kills
Absol has a very nice Attack score and its Speed is not that far behind. Absol is faster than many Pokemon in its class and with the Super Luck ability you can make short work of your opponent’s Pokemon by landing a few Critical Hits before they even get a chance to attack you.
IVs: Atk: 252, Def:8, Spd:252
Nature: Adamant (Atk+/SpA-), Jolly (Spd+/SpA-)
Move 1: Stone Edge (TM)
Move 2: Night Slash
Move 3: Assurance (TM)
Move 4: Psycho Cut Thanks Jhamin!
Yes, I know some of these moves are not very powerful and others are not 100% accurate. What they all have in common is that they are Physical moves. They will all use Absol’s high Attack score to their advantage.
Absol is weak against Fighting and Bug-type moves. Psycho Cut (Psychic 70/100) is a good hedge against those pesky Fighting-type Pokemon. Stone Edge (Rock 100/80) is effective against the Bug-type Pokemon you will face.
Other Absol Uses
There are many other uses for an Absol in your party. For one thing the Ability Pressure causes wild Pokemon to appear more often. Couple this with teaching Absol False Swipe and you can do some Pokemon hunting.
You can also teach an Absol Perish Song, Baton Pass, Substitute and Mean Look. Start with Mean Look, drop a Perish Song down and Substitute until you need to pull off a Baton Pass to get your Absol out of danger. This tactic can be very deadly in a Double Battle situation.
Pokemon Farming: Absol

Today in Pokemon Farming, the disaster Pokemon, Absol!
This little dark Pokemon, is in Pokemon lore, the omen of disaster and bad things. It’s defense stat is not so great, but the attacks it can put out are some great ones. Having one of my special Absols wont be bad at all though! Besides looking so cool, these guys can do a little of everything–
- Flamethrower
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Dark Pulse (STAB)
It also has two abilities: Pressure, when the opponents attacks hit, 2 PP of that move are used instead of one and Super Luck, which increases the critical hit ratio of moves. Pretty nice abilities I think!
So, would you like one of my ‘everything’ Absols? Heres what to do:
- Comment with your Name and Friend Code
- Even if we have traded before, I need your information again!
- Get a Pokemon to trade (preferably non-Sinnoh, though I will take anything, items are always appreciated.)
- Be in the Wi-Fi zone at 5pm EDT on October 19 (Friday)
- Make yourself available to Trade (Invite–>Trade) I will come to you when I’m ready.
- If you are new to our site, your first comment will be moderated. Don’t worry if your post doesn’t show, we will get to it in time, and you will not miss out!
- Only Absol will be handed out tonight, thanks!

Special Pokemon Farmer’s Market: Second Harvest
August 31, 2007 | 87 Comments

Greetings, Everyone!
Welcome to an extra special edition of the Friday Farmer’s Market: Second Harvest. My handle here is BryGuy. Tonight’s Farmer’s Market will be very different, so please be aware of the new conditions. Over the past number of weeks I have been offering pokemon with special movesets. Many people have been asking me for more of these pokes for various reasons. Tonight, I am going to clear out my boxes of any leftover pokemon from these events. The pokemon offered tonight are as follows:
- Houndour (about 4 individuals)
- Elekid (about 6 individuals)
- Cyndaquil (about 10 individuals)
- Swinub (about 9 individuals)
These are the same little guys I offered at previous Farmer’s Market Events. They all have amazing movesets, they are all 100% game-legal, and they were all bred by me using normal methods and loving care! Check my previous Farmer’s Market posts to see all the details about these awesome pokemon. Please be careful to follow the special procedures indicated below.
Here are the rules and procedures for tonight’s Second Harvest Farmer’s Market:
- Enter my trainer name and friend code into your pal pad. My trainer name is BryGuy and my friend code is 3737 6015 6762.
- Have a Pokemon ready in your party to trade to me. Today I will accept anything, but I like to be surprised! Feel free to trade me something you think is cool or unique. It is especially nice if the Pokemon is holding something (berries, items, etc.)!
- Post a comment to this article saying which ONE of these pokemon you would like. I will issue them on a first-post, first present, basis. If you are not ready in the WiFi Club when I come to trade with you, I will move to the next person on my list. You may need to accept the pokemon offered to you. There will probably not be much choice in terms of male or female, etc.
- In your post requesting a pokemon, MAKE SURE YOU CLEARLY AND ACCURATELY LIST YOUR TRAINER NAME FROM YOUR GAME AND YOUR FRIEND CODE. EVEN IF WE HAVE TRADED BEFORE, PLEASE LIST THIS INFORMATION. I had to clear my Pal Pad a few times so most of my previously entered “Pals” have been removed. I will enter as many of friend codes before the Farmer’s Market as I can.
- In your game, enter the WiFi Club at 7:30 pm eastern time (6:30 pm central time) on Friday, August 31, 2007. Please note this new time for tonight!
- When you enter the Wi-Fi zone select the trade option (INVITE -> TRADE) and wait for me to select you.
- I will not be on early tonight.
- Please be patient. I may have to leave the WiFi Club sometimes to get more pokemon. Please don’t panic, I’ll return promptly!
- The Farmer’s Market will run from 7:30 to 8:30 pm EDT.
- I am only prepared to trade the pokemon listed above. Please do not ask for other Pokemon. I will not be trading anything other than what I have listed tonight. Thanks.
I am looking forward to trading. See you at the Farmer’s Market!

Pokemon Farmers Market: Houndour
July 27, 2007 | 68 Comments

Greetings, Everyone!
Welcome to Friday of “Dark Week”! My handle here is BryGuy and I will be heading this evening’s Pokemon Farmer’s Market featuring Houndour.
After I volunteered to breed Houndour this week I realized that I haven’t played with a Houndour or Houndoom since the Gold and Silver Pokemon games! Somehow I missed it in Emerald! Anyway, I was glad I chose this little dark doggie because it was nostalgic for me as well as a fresh challenge to breed something unique and useful.
After a minor hassle of trying to catch one of these puppies in Pokemon Pearl (fiddling with pokeradar, walking in tall grass on route 214, finally encountering a rare Houndoom and discovering that they know “Roar” and run away!) I got to work breeding a “knock-out” moveset. After involving sets of parents that included Arcanine and Lucario as well as Houndoom, I was finally able to settle on the following moves to breed into the level 1, baby Houndour:
- Dark Pulse
- Crunch
- Thunder Fang
- Flamethrower
Pretty nice moves for a little, level 1 doggie! You may decide that he never needs to learn another move, ever! These Houndour are 100% game-legal. They were not hacked in any way. The move set was obtained through normal breeding and careful study!
By the way, I give nicknames to all of my Pokemon. I know some people never give nicknames and hate the idea of thinking up names. I enjoy the challenge and I think it helps give each little, pixelated Pokemon a personality. It also helps me tell them apart so I can quickly find a specific creature. Last week all the Elekids I traded were named after characters from the Star Trek television series. This week, all the Houndour I trade will have names from Aztec (Mexica) history and mythology. Pretty geeky, huh? After the trade, you can pop onto Wikipedia and find out what awesome deity your Houndour is named after. A little “educational fun” tossed in with your Pokemon!!
Please feel free to turn up the loudness on your game so we can talk back and forth during the trade, making selection easier. By the way, you don’t need a headset to talk. Your DS built-in microphone will do the trick. If you would rather not talk and select a Houndour, I will pick one for you.
Here are the rules and procedures for tonight’s Farmer’s Market:
- Enter my trainer name and friend code into your pal pad. My trainer name is BryGuy and my friend code is 3737 6015 6762.
- Have a Pokemon ready in your party to trade to me. Today I will accept anything but I like to be surprised! Feel free to trade me something you think is cool or unique. It is especially nice if the Pokemon is holding something (berries, items, etc.)!
- Post a comment to this article saying that you would like a Houndour. Make sure you clearly and accurately list your trainer name from your game and your friend code. Even if we have traded before, please list this information. I can’t guarantee that you are still in my Pal Pad. I will enter as many of these before the Farmer’s Market as I can.
- In your game, enter the WiFi Club at 7:00 pm eastern time (6:00 pm central time) on Friday, July 27, 2007.
- When you enter the Wi-Fi zone select the trade option (INVITE -> TRADE) and wait for me to select you.
- If you can, be early. I may be online early.
- Please be patient. I should have plenty of Houndour. I may have to leave the WiFi Club sometimes to get more Houndour. Please don’t panic, I’ll return promptly!
- The Farmer’s Market will run from 7:00 to 8:00 pm EDT.
- I am only prepared to trade specially prepared Houndour. Please do not ask for other Pokemon. I will not be trading anything other than Houndour tonight. Thanks.
I am looking forward to trading. See you at the Farmer’s Market!

Pokemon Farming: Umbreon
July 26, 2007 | 41 Comments
Whitdjinn here, reporting live from Dark Week to bring you my favorite Dark pokemon. Umbreon! Straight out of Jhoto, it is one of the seven possible evolutions of Eevee.
Umbreon was a favorite for a long time among the competitive battlers with the super high spec. defense stat. While its still high, the move set Umrbeon gets isn’t quite up to par with the other choices that are out there.
Regardless, it remains a fan favorite all over the world. And now’s your chance to get your very own Umbreon without going through the hassle of making your Eevee happy! I’ve done it for you!
Rules
1. I don’t care what you trade me though I would prefer a non-Sinnoh Pokemon.
2. The Pokemon you trade to me must be holding something.
3. When you leave your information in the comments below your trainer name must be correct. When I do the trading I refer to the comments on the site to see who gets what.
4. When you enter the Wi-Fi zone select the trade option and wait for me to select you.
5. If you can, be early. I am sometimes on early.
6. Don’t be afraid to trade amongst yourselves.
