When Ruby and Sapphire hit the Pokemon scene a new ability came with them. This ability is known as Pickup.

Diamond and Pearl also allow for the Pickup ability and the following Pokemon can have this ability: Aipom, Ambipom, Linoone, Meowth, Munchlax, Pachirusu, Phanpy, Teddiursa and Zigzagoon.

Most players of Ruby and Sapphire made it a point to use their Zigzagoon/Linoone as an HM machine as well as an item finder. Even know I keep a Linoone in my party when training so that I can collect rare stones used for evolution.

If you keep a Pokemon with the Pickup ability in your party there is a 10% chance he will “pick something up” at the end of each battle.

Be aware that some of the rare items only appear if a Pokemon is within a certain level range. For example TM01 Focus Punch can only be found if your Pokemon is between levels 71 and 90. Once your Pokemon turns level 91 he can no longer Pickup a Focus Punch TM.

Pokemon Farming: Aipom

Today, we present a Farmers Market Special: Aipom, the long tail Pokemon.

The Aipom for this event are unique, I did not breed them for fighting. I bred them to be item hungry fiends, using that hand for whatever item grabbing they can! I’ve bred up a “Field-Kit” Aipom, a Poke you can carry with you while EV training, chaining for shinys or just leveling up that can double as an item grabber.

First of all, these Aipom I have whipped up all have the ability Pickup. A Pokemon with this ability of having a 10% chance of picking up an item after a battle. The items you pick up vary with the level of your Poke, higher the level, more rare the item. They do not have to be in front of the party and you can have as many Pickup Pokes as you please in your party. In low levels, you can pick up escape ropes, potions, and antidotes. Higher levels can yield rare candies, some evolution stones like dawn and shiny stones, TMs, and on really rare occasions, Leftovers! An entire list is here.

On top of this random, item snatching ability, it has the in-battle moves like Thief and Covet to grab up the goods as well, which is really great for stealing those certain wild-held items, like Chanseys Lucky Egg, Kings rock, Magmar/Electabuzz evolution item, etc. No more tedium of having to catch a bunch of Pokes for an item and then hoping they even have it.

So here is the “Field Kit” move set:

  • Thief- Attack 40 Accuracy 100% 10PP has a chance of stealing an item
  • Covet-Attack 40 Accuracy 100% 40PP cutely begs to steal an item
  • Fling-Attack ?? Accuracy 100% 10PP “Flings” held item, if any. Power depends on held item. Good for when you have something you don’t want!
  • Double Hit-Attack 35 Accuracy 90% 10PP Strikes twice (Aipom will evolve to Ambipom upon learning this move, so it will evolve right away)

To make this the ultimate in “field use,” I would recommend teaching it one of the HMs it can learn, Cut, Strength, or Rock Smash. (To replace Double Hit once you’ve used to evolve Aipom perhaps?) I decided to not breed it with HM moves because they are readily available to everyone and so that you can choose which one you need more.

These non-battle “Feild Kit” Aipom will all be named after fictitious monkeys!
