Second Chance for the Shiny Pichu Event

March 14, 2010 | Leave a Comment

If you missed last month’s giveaway of the Shiny Pichu at Gamestop you get one more chance. The Shiny Pichu will trigger an event when traded to HeartGold and SoulSilver that will allow you to befriend a Spiky-Eared Pichu in Ilex Forest at the Celebi Shrine. The Shiny Pichu is darker colored than a normal one, similar to a Pikachu. These are available as a Mystery Gift download on the Nintendo Wi-Fi until March 25, 2010 so that Europe and Australia can get a chance to get them before HeartGold and SoulSilver are released there, but North American games can download them also. These Pichus will be at level 30 and will be holding an Everstone that will keep them from evolving. They will come with a Classic Ribbon and know the following moves:
Charge
Volt Tackle
Endure
Endeavor

The Spiky-Eared Pichu will also be at level 30 and will be holding a Zap Plate and know these moves:
Volt Tackle
Helping Hand
Swagger
Pain Split

If you have received mystery gifts before then you are ready to go. Just click on MYSTERY GIFT on the opening screen, then RECEIVE GIFT, then GET VIA NINTENDO WFC and it will load the Wonder Card on to your game.
If you have yet to receive a mystery gift, go to the 3rd floor in Jubilife TV. Talk to the man next to a lady and type in “everyone happy” as a response to his first question and type in “wi-fi connection” to the next question. Save your game and when you restart it the MYSTERY GIFT option box will appear below NEW GAME on the opening screen.

As per usual you will need to have:

  • Room for the wonder card (can’t have more than three)
  • A Diamond, Pearl or Platinum and a DS
  • Have obtained the Pokedex

Remember, you can only get one shiny Pichu per game cartridge and if you picked up one from Gamestop last month you won’t be able to download this one. You can, however, trade them to another game and restart your game thus allowing you to get as many Pichus as you can want if you are willing to grind through the intro part of the game over and over again.
Stay tuned as the Yellow Forest Event for the Pokéwalker has already been announced for April 1, 2010.

Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG): Rumble

December 19, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Pokemon Rumble

On December 2, 2009 Pokemon International released the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG): Rumble to coincide with the release of the Pokemon Rumble game on WiiWare. This game combines TCG strategy with a board game presentation, is fully compatible with all of your existing Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) cards and can be played with two to seven players.

The box contains 16 cards (same in every box), a set of energy dice, a targeting die, a Battle Royale Playmat, 14 player markers (two per player), and rules. The 16 cards are from an exclusive Pokémon Rumble set that can only be acquired in this box and each card has a foil Pokémon Rumble logo imprinted on it.

The game begins by laying out the Battle Royale Playmat and placing Pokemon cards (one face-up and one face-down) on each of the seven slots on the playmat. Players then take turns placing their player markers (max of two per slot, can’t double up your own marker) on the playmat. The player markers have either a three or a five on the back side and these numbers come into play when the game ends for scoring purposes.

On a player’s turn the four energy dice are rolled. The dice are six-siders that have a dash on one side and various energy symbols on the other five faces. There is also a special energy symbol that can be used as any type of energy. After rolling the dice the player scans the Pokémon on the playmat (not just ones with his/her marker) and chooses which attack to use. For example Rattata can use Bite for 20 damage at a cost of two colorless energy and Pikachu can use Volt Tackle which can cause 60 damage to another Pokémon but also causes 10 damage to Pikachu for a cost of one electric and two colorless energy. If both of these Pokémon are on the playmat and a player rolls enough energy they can use either of these attacks to injure or knock out other Pokémon.

After choosing what attack to use from which Pokémon a special red target die is cast. This is another six-sided die that is numbered from one to three (three ones, two twos, one three) and decides which Pokemon is hit with the attack. All attacks are made in a clockwise direction and the Pokémon launching the attack can not attack itself.

After rolling the target die and seeing which Pokemon is hit weaknesses and resistances are taken into consideration. This part of the game works exactly the same as the standard TCG system. When a Pokémon is weak or strong against an attack they suffer more or less damage. If a Pokémon is not knocked out from an attack, damage counters are placed on the card. If a Pokémon is knocked out from the attack the attacking player takes the card and flips the remaining card face-up. If that was the last Pokémon in that slot then the slot remains empty and is ignored for the rest of the game.

There are two ways for the game to end: If only one player still has markers on the playmat or if only one pile of Pokémon still has player markers on it. When the game ends any remaining player markers on the playmat are given back to their respective players and the number on the back is added to their score along with one point per Pokémon defeated. If a player knocked-out four Pokémon then four points would be added to their score. If this same player had their three point marker on the playmat at the end of the game their score would now be seven (four Pokémon + three point player marker). The player with the highest score is the winner.

The cards in the game are 100% compatible with the existing Pokémon TCG cards but not all Pokémon TCG cards can be used in Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG): Rumble. Any Pokémon that requires more than four energy for its attacks can not be used due to the number of dice in the game. Also special effects are not used in this game so Pokémon who rely on such things will be less powerful.

All in all I have to say that we played the game and found it enjoyable. The game is weighted more towards luck than strategy (dice) but some basic strategic skills will help. The learning curve is very low and even though the game suggests players be 10 or older this game can easily be played with younger players who enjoy collecting the Pokémon Trading Cards but are not able to play the game.

Put this one on your holiday shopping list for your Pokemon fans!

As an added bonus Pokémon International has also released a new collector tin for the holiday season. The Arceus tin is available now and includes a special foil Lv. X Arceus card and four booster packs from recent sets.

You can purchase this game through Funagain Games.

WiiWare Preview: Pokémon Rumble

September 10, 2009 | 1 Comment

Pokemon Rumble

Earlier this year Nintendo released a Pokémon title in Japan for the Nintendo Wii called Melee! Pokémon Scramble. This Wiiware title has been renamed Pokémon Rumble and will soon (no release date yet) be available in North America.

In this game you send your Pokemon out into the wild to train and gather items and money. Once you have trained your Pokemon to a sufficient level it is off to the Battle Royal!

Supporting up to 4 players in a real-time battle format should make for some very interesting game play.

This title is produced by the same company who created Pokémon Ranch so expect the same sort of graphics.

Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver Update

August 10, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Pokemon Heart Gold and Pokemon Soul Silver

As we near the Japanese release date of the new HeartGold and SoulSilver games scheduled for September 12, 2009 more and more details are being revealed about these much anticipated remakes of the classic Pokémon Gold and Silver games.

Several legendaries not previously available in the Diamond, Pearl or Platinum versions will make their appearance in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Lugia is the legendary bird available exclusively in SoulSilver and the fiery Ho-Oh can be found only in HeartGold. The legendary dogs, Entei, Suicune and Raikou, can be found in both games in the Brass Tower and after you confront them, they will roam Johto just as the legendary birds do in Platinum.

After beating the elite four, the game will become even more interesting as recently it was revealed that Kyogre will be catchable in HeartGold and Groudon in SoulSilver with ability to confront Rayquaza by bringing the two together. Kanto, where the pokémon adventures began, can be accessed by ship and you will have the opportunity to add Mewtwo to your collection of legendaries.

Similar to the Regigigas giveaway that allowed Platinum users the confront and capture Regice, Regirock and Registeel, having the Arceus event pokémon in your party will bring Cynthia from Sinnoh to the Shinto Ruins and allow you to obtain Palkia, Dialga or Giratina at level 1 each with a special move that they can’t normal learn. A Pikachu-colored Pichu is being given away with pre-sales for the newest Pokemon movie in Japan and it is said to unlock another area of Johto as does the Jirachi that was given away by Nintendo Zone in Japan.

While the US release isn’t scheduled until Spring 2010, the excitement is building for these new adventures and hopefully we should soon see the release of Dr. Oak’s letter allowing us to catch Shaymin in the wild and our own chance to get Arceus and the special Pichu this Winter.

Pokemon VGC Regionals: Nashville

June 15, 2009 | 9 Comments

This past weekend, The Pokemon Company International made a stop in Nashville, Tennessee for their final Regional stop in the Pokemon Video Game Championships. The event was held inside the historic Gaylord Opry in Opryland, just north of Nashville. There, more than 350 players from around the nation signed up for the Senior Division early Saturday morning. Of those who registered only 128 were chosen in each age division so 256 players were chosen and of those 8 will be going to National Championships in St. Louis.

Forum members Taterbud and I(MissingNo.) arrived late Friday night. It was quite a long trip from Northeastern Indiana. Both of us were exhausted, yet excited about being in Nashville. We picked our spot for the night, and then went out for some food and exploring. The area we ended up in revolved completely around the Opryland. Hotels and restaurants were the only places around, besides a few small shops. However, inside the actual Opryland was a mall, movie theater, and of course the large hotel and convention center.

Nashville was also hosting its large Country Music Festival this past weekend. Each hotel was booked, and the city was full of people. Downtown on Saturday, there were multiple tents set up with live music. Many of the streets were closed off, and every parking spot was taken.

Back at the hotel, Taterbud and I were both exhausted. She took a short swim in the hotel pool, then we both packed it in for an early night, knowing we’d have to be across the street at the Gaylord by 8:30 in the morning. That next morning, Taterbud found out that I took no chances of sleeping in. First the hotel alarm clock went off, followed by my DSi alarm clock, followed by a wake-up call, and then my constant nudges. We got a quick breakfast free of charge from the hotel, checked out, then headed on over. I hadn’t realized how big the place actually was until I found myself lost. We spotted a group of people that we suspected were Pokemon fanatics…. the Ash costume was a dead giveaway. Inside, there was a guide standing near the entrance wearing a green Pokemon Staff t-shirt. He directed us to follow the previous crowd around the inside of the Gaylord to the area where Nintendo had set up their event.

When we got there, we found ourselves at the very back of a long long line of registrants. The line moved quickly, and we were both eventually registered and given a number and a matching wristband with the number and corresponding Pokemon. Inside there were multiple balloon representations of D/P/Pt Pokemon.  We also saw some characters as costumes walking about and taking pictures with children.  There was a snack bar set up, which we avoided.  We wandered a bit observing some of the convention center as we waiting for the selections to be posted.  Around 10am, the group was all called to take a massive picture, followed by a dance competition.  Pikachu was seen getting his groove on.  And then, the selections were posted on the screens scattered about the hall.

Neither Taterbud or I were selected to participate.  It was a very disappointing feeling.  I had spent a couple of months breeding and training for this event.  In fact, as soon as the event was posted on the forums, I gave Taterbud a call and told her that we were going, and I started planning right then and there.  Yet, the trip wasn’t a total waste.  As soon as we found out we weren’t accepted into the competition, we immediately got in line for the main reason on why we went…. Shiny Milotics!  These were given out via a GBA slot device.  This way, no one could pick up more than one.  Once you recieved your Milotic, your wrist band was cut so that they knew not to give you another.  We saw brief glimpses of a couple of battles on the screens while we stood in line.  Immediately the first person was eliminated, and I was just happy it wasn’t me.

We received our Milotics and proceeded out of the Nintendo area and back out into the rest of the Opry.  It was a beautiful place, with shops and restaurants and hotel rooms, with balconies that allowed the residents to observe the people below.  We found our way back to the car after exploring and taking pictures.  It was an awesome experience, and I can’t wait until next year when I can try again.  At least now I have a team already bred and trained.  Plus we both ended up with VGC09 Shiny Milotics, which less than 1500 were estimated to have been given away total at all the events combined.  We started our journy back home, waving goodbye to Nashville, and eventually Tennessee.

More pictures can be seen here: MissingNo.’s Photo Album

Editor’s note: A few minor corrections were required after posting. It was The Pokemon Company International and not Nintendo that held the event and the 128 number applied to each age group and was not a total count. We apologize for the mistake and those who made the mistake have been sentenced to five minutes in a room with a hungry Munchlax whilst covered in Honey and sprinkled with Poffins.
