Pokemon Farming: Back to School Bulbasaurs

August 27, 2009 | 54 Comments

Summer is slowly coming to an end and so is your summer break. It is time to once again return to school and get back to basics and numbers 1-2-3 in your pokedex is Bulbasaur, Ivysaur and Venusaur.

Bulbasaurs are a Poison/Grass type with a good Special Attack and Special Defense and with some nurturing and training they quickly grow to a mighty Venusaur. Much like you should be about returning to school, these Bulbasaurs will all have a Calm (+ SpDef, – Attack) nature to enhance their mighty defense and be able to handle anything that is coming at them. They will all have the ability of Overgrow which will increase the power of their Grass attacks when their HP runs low

Leech Seed (Power – , Acc 90)
Much like the seeds of knowledge being planted in your fertile minds, Leech Seed drains 1/8 of your opponent’s HP and adds it to your HP until your opponent switches out as long as it isn’t a Grass type.

Sleep Powder (Power – , Acc 75)
Gone are the late nights, staying up watching TV or playing pokemon. Its back to bed early and Sleep Powder is the trick. Your opponent will sleep for 2-5 turns while that Leech Seed keeps draining away its HP.

Sludge Bomb (Poison STAB, Power 90, Acc 100)
After getting that good night’s sleep its time to eat right and cut out that junk food. I mentioned Bulbasaur is a poison type and Sludge Bomb is not only a powerful STAB attack, but gives you a 30% chance of poisoning your opponent.

Petal Dance (Grass STAB, Power 90, Acc 100)
There is more to returning to school than studying. You are able to get together with some of your friends that you might not have seen much during the summer. Petal Dance is a powerful Stab move that lasts 2-3 turns, but leaves you confused at the end.

These baby bulbas will come from our resident pokefarmer Sorgatani.
The event will be at 9:00 AM in Victoria, Australia on Sunday August 30, 2009
That will be 7 PM Eastern Daylight Time (4 PM Pacific Daylight) on Saturday, August 29, 2009 in the US and Saturday night at midnight in the UK
For everyone else here is a Time Zone Converter.

Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver Update

Pokemon Heart Gold and Pokemon Soul Silver

As we near the Japanese release date of the new HeartGold and SoulSilver games scheduled for September 12, 2009 more and more details are being revealed about these much anticipated remakes of the classic Pokémon Gold and Silver games.

Several legendaries not previously available in the Diamond, Pearl or Platinum versions will make their appearance in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Lugia is the legendary bird available exclusively in SoulSilver and the fiery Ho-Oh can be found only in HeartGold. The legendary dogs, Entei, Suicune and Raikou, can be found in both games in the Brass Tower and after you confront them, they will roam Johto just as the legendary birds do in Platinum.

After beating the elite four, the game will become even more interesting as recently it was revealed that Kyogre will be catchable in HeartGold and Groudon in SoulSilver with ability to confront Rayquaza by bringing the two together. Kanto, where the pokémon adventures began, can be accessed by ship and you will have the opportunity to add Mewtwo to your collection of legendaries.

Similar to the Regigigas giveaway that allowed Platinum users the confront and capture Regice, Regirock and Registeel, having the Arceus event pokémon in your party will bring Cynthia from Sinnoh to the Shinto Ruins and allow you to obtain Palkia, Dialga or Giratina at level 1 each with a special move that they can’t normal learn. A Pikachu-colored Pichu is being given away with pre-sales for the newest Pokemon movie in Japan and it is said to unlock another area of Johto as does the Jirachi that was given away by Nintendo Zone in Japan.

While the US release isn’t scheduled until Spring 2010, the excitement is building for these new adventures and hopefully we should soon see the release of Dr. Oak’s letter allowing us to catch Shaymin in the wild and our own chance to get Arceus and the special Pichu this Winter.

Discuss this in our Heart Gold and Soul Silver thread on the forum.

Pokemon Farming: Ralts

August 5, 2009 | 54 Comments

Ralts has a new option in this fourth generation. Male Kirlia can evolve into Gallade by using a Dawn Stone on them.

<

Gallade has similar base stats as its counterpart Gardevoir, but its strength is as a Physical Attacker rather than a Special Attacker. Poor little Ralts can’t learn many physical attacks, but it doesn’t need to as Gallade learns strong STAB moves as Psycho Cut and Close Combat as well as Night Slash and Leaf Blade as level up moves. Earthquake, Stone Edge, Rock Slide, Poison Jab, Aerial Ace and X-scissor can all be taught to it by using TMs. Now thanks to Platinum move tutors it can learn Thunderpunch, Fire Punch and Ice Punch. All these attacks, a base Attack stat of 125 and the ability to learn Sword Dance as a level up move makes Gallade a force in any battle.
There are many different strategies for using Gallade and I bred these little Ralts with some moves to utilize them.

Hypnosis

The strategy here is known as Sleep and Sweep. Put the opponent to sleep, Sword Dance and sweep away or skip the Sword Dance and start sweeping right away. Gallade can break down a lot of different walls this way and make those slow bulky types pay.

Thunder Wave
If you are leery of accuracy of Hypnosis, you can use Thunder Wave to paralyze your opponent and give Gallade a speed advantage.
Another strategy is the Double Status. Since most opponents will switch out after hypnosis, you can greet the incoming pokémon with Paralysis and cripple two of your opponent’s pokémon.

Substitute
This move uses 1/4 of its HP to create a substitute. Attach a Salac berry to Gallade and sub away. Sword Dance behind you sub’s protection and when the Salac berry kicks in, you will have boosted both your Attack and Speed.

Shadow Sneak (Ghost, Power 40, Acc 100)
A priority move that Ralts can learn that gives Gallade a first attack move that is super-effective against Ghost and Psychics. Strap a Focus Sash on Gallade and its many attacks and it can serve as a counter to most leads and Shadow Sneak can counter any opponents that might be also be sashed.

All these Ralts will be Adamant (+Attack, – SpAttack) males with a Dawn Stone attached. When evolved, Gallade will have the ability of Steadfast which will raise its speed one level (50%) every time it flinches. These Gallades will make excellent False Swipers as they learn False Swipe at level 45 to go with their two status inflicting moves to help you capture wild pokémon.

  • To receive one of these Gallades to be, be in the wifi room on Sunday at 5:00 PM Pacific (8:00 PM Eastern) on the August 9, 2009
  • Comment with your Name and Friend Code
  • Get a pokémon to trade, I’m not looking for anything particular just something you don’t want.
  • Make yourself available to Trade (invite->Trade) I will come to you when I’m ready.

These will come from my Platinum game

What’s New in Platinum: New Moon Island

August 5, 2009 | 5 Comments

Platinum owners can now travel to New Moon Island and battle the Pitch-Black pokémon, Darkrai by obtaining a Member Card over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection from now until September 13th, 2009. This card allows you access into the Harbor Inn in Canalave City. The Harbor Inn is in the northeast corner of town and before the Member Card is active, the door is locked and the sign is too faded to read.

If you have received the Secret Key to unlock the Rotom forms or received mystery gifts from Pokémon Battle Revolution then you are ready to go. Just click on MYSTERY GIFT on the opening screen, then RECEIVE GIFT, then GET VIA NINTENDO WFC and it will load the Wonder Card on to your game
If you have yet to receive a mystery gift, go to the 3rd floor in Jubilife TV. Talk to the man next to a lady and type in “everyone happy” as a response to his first question and type in “wi-fi connection” to the next question. Save your game and when you restart it the MYSTERY GIFT option box will appear below NEW GAME on the opening screen.
Once you have downloaded the Wonder Card, the Member Card can be picked up from the green dressed delivery man in any Poke Mart. Even if you haven’t beaten the elite four yet you still can receive the Member Card, but to battle Darkrai you must finish a few things. First you need to have obtained the National Dex from Professor Rowan. Then you need to visit the son of Sailor Eldritch in Canalave City and retrieve the Lunar Wing from Fullmoon Island.
When you read the sign at the Harbor Inn it will now say “A Roost For Restless Sailors,” and “Enjoy sweet dreams in our sumptuous beds.” Once you enter the inn you be whisked off to bed and will find yourself on New Moon Island, follow the path to find Darkrai waiting for you.

Darkrai will be at level 50 and have the following moves:
Hypnosis
Faint Attack
Nightmare
Double Team

If Darkrai faints, don’t worry, the Sailor Eldritch can now take you to New Moon Island and Darkrai will be waiting for you there. You can battle him as many times as you like(or flee if you find yourself outmatched) until you capture him.

You can only capture Darkrai once so I recommend bringing a pokemon with the ability of synchronize with the nature you prefer. Darkrai has good stats all around, but its best base stats are in Special Attack and Speed so Modest or Timid are usually considered the best natures. Here are some moves to consider when putting together a team to capture Darkrai.
False Swipe - despite its looks Darkrai is a Dark type, not a Ghost, so False Swipe will work to lower it to 1 HP.
Thunder Wave – Sleep and Paralysis help to make pokemon easier to catch and while Sleep is more effective, it is only temporary while Paralysis will stay with it for the rest of the battle. Magnezone and Magneton will resist Faint Attack while dealing out the Thunder Wave.
Taunt – Darkrai has only one attack and Taunt will force it to use Faint Attack. Darkrai’s ability is Bad Dreams which causes you to lose 1/8 of your HP on every turn that you are asleep and its Nightmare attack will further drain away ¼ of your HP. Taunt will prevent it from putting you to sleep with Hypnosis and from using Double Team.
Haze – Double Team not only raises its evasiveness, but makes it harder to catch. Haze wipes away all stat changes.
Aromatherapy - Hypnosis can spell doom to even the highest level pokemon as Bad Dreams and Nightmare will quickly drain away your HP. So even if you quickly lower Darkrai’s HP, it can still cripple you before you can catch it. Switch out your pokemon as they fall asleep and switch in an Aromatherapist to wake up you whole team. Chesto berries can be a handy hold item especially for your aromatherapist as you want to make sure it doesn’t fall asleep before it wakes up its teammates.
Vital Spirit and Insomnia are helpful abilities to avoid Darkrai’s Bad Dreams and Nightmares and, as scary as it might seem, I recommend you battle Darkrai at night (after 8 PM) as Dusk Balls are the most effective ball against this tough catch.
